ERRORS
So I've been lagging a bit on the blog but I have a good excuse; I've been painting a lot. and going to a lot of shows (more on that very soon). It feels like I've been in the studio even more than usual actually, although that's probably due to a painting that gave me a particularly hard time. I'd like to report that said painting was conquered and that I worked through the problems and now it looks amazing...but nay -- it beat me, and I abandoned it after a week of work. (it's now un-stretched and rolled up in a corner where it can no longer taunt me.)
"THE RESPONSE" PRINTS NOW AVAILABLE
I'm pleased to report that the limited run of gicleé prints of my painting, "the Response", are now available via Paper Tiger.
ON THE EASEL
I've been working on a new 36" x 48" piece for a few weeks now and am just finishing it up. Here's a sneak peek at some progress pictures*. I tried to take pictures from the same vantage point (hence the cropped layers). apologies for the glare.
SENZA PIETÁ
Here's the new piece I had in the show last week at 941 Geary. It's called "senza pietá" and is an attempt at my version of the classic Pieta by Michelangelo... or rather my version of Bouguereau's version (which I like better). Although it does contain ladies, the composition was very much out of my comfort zone.
"AS THEY SEE IT" GROUP SHOW
I'll be participating in a group show opening this Saturday, July 17th, at the brand new 941 Geary Gallery in SF. The show is titled "As They See It" and features an incredible lineup of artists focusing on realism and representation. I'll be contributing a new painting, the composition of which is very much outside of my usual comfort zone. I'll post it here after the opening this weekend, but for those in Bay Area, I definitely recommend seeing the entire show in person.
NEW PRINTS COMING VERY SOON
I've been working on a limited edition gicleé of "the Reponse"with excellent LA-based print house, Paper Tiger, for a few months now. I just got the final run, signed and numbered them, and will ship them back down to LA tomorrow -- so they will be available (via Paper Tiger) very soon!
CURBS & STOOPS INTERVIEW
I did a short interview a few weeks back with the website Curbs & Stoops. Word has it they will be starting a print edition as well with my piece "Lush" on the cover. Fun! here's the interview: http://www.curbsandstoops.com/blog/?page_id=700
NEW YORK AND THE MET
I'm at 35,000 ft. -- on my way back to SFO from Boston. it's Virgin America, so i'm writing this and watching Die Hard, aglow in purple light and surrounded by what looks like a giant flying ipod. It's now been over a week since I painted anything, and I can't wait to get back to it.
MONTREAL pt.II
"Looking East" opened on Wednesday night at Yves Laroche Gallery. The gallery had just recently moved to a brand new 9000 sq. ft. space -- huge for a gallery. that was enough room for a solo show from Daniel Martin Diaz, Justin's "Looking East" group show with 40+ pieces, and a more permanent collection.
MONTREAL pt.I
I got into Montreal late last Tuesday night and met my good friend Chris Sherriff at a hotel downtown. I met Chris 12 years ago in Toronto on tour with my old band. We stayed with him and his parents every time we were in Ontario and a few years later he was on tour with us as our roady/merch guy/mechanic/driver.
MONTREAL CHECK-IN, LONDON MILES FRIDAY
Montreal has been awesome so far, and the opening at Yves Laroche was amazing. I'll post pictures and a more detailed entry within the next few days, but wanted to drop a quick word about the London Miles "Next Generation" group show opening tonight (Friday) in London.
EGO MAGAZINE UKRAINE
I got some fun mail today: a couple copies of the June issue of Ego Magazine i'm featured in. I have no idea how I got on the radar of a Ukrainian print magazine, but it's quite an honor. A huge thank you to Aleksandra at Ego for the opportunity. I did an interview for the feature, and was asked some really interesting questions.
VIRIDIAN I
The sister painting to the 12" x 12" I posted last week will be down at Thinkspace for the Culver City Art Walk on June 5th. There's a really solid lineup so if you're in the area, definitely try and stop by.
LONDON MILES GROUP SHOW
As I mentioned a while back, I'll have a small painting in "the Next Generation" group show at London Miles Gallery in London, England. the opening is June 4th. there will be something like 45 artists in this show and should be fantastic. I really wish I could make it out for the opening -- next time.
NEW PAINTING: "LUSH"
This was the first piece I finished after the "Marks" show (progress pic posted a few weeks back here). It's now on it's way to Montreal for the show Justin Giarla (of the Shooting Gallery) is curating there. The show will be at Yves Laroche gallery in their brand new space, and I'll be making the trip out for the opening June 9th.
GETTING ALL THE PAINT OUT
Since I don't have any new work to post yet, I thought I'd do a quick entry on paints, and one of my favorite painting supplies: the Tube Wringer --a very simple device with gears that will squeeze every last drop of anything from a tube.
BIG NEW PAINTINGS & LATE NIGHT MUSEUMS
I'm still painting...not a whole lot else going on. I'm about %80 done with the first of the wood panel pieces, and this week I started on a new bigger canvas (below). this new one is 48" x 48", and while that isn't huge for me, the composition is much different than I'm used to. I usually tend to focus on a single torso/head, but this one will have two subjects, with both full figures within the scope of the canvas.
ON THE EASEL, A WEEK AGO
I'm now done with the two 12" x 12" pieces I started two weeks ago. one, or both of them, will be part of "the Next Generation"art show (flyer below) at London's London Miles Gallery. It's curated by ThinkSpace (now down in Culver City), and features a ton of excellent artists from all over. It opens June 3rd for anybody in the area.
MUCH ART
This week, I continued on the two 12" x 12"s i've been working on. they're going pretty well and are both almost done. (one thing about painting so small -- they go quickly). I'll get some progress pics up soon. until then, I was able to get to a few art openings this week, so I thought I'd post a bit about that. word?
FORWARD
I'm just finishing up this painting here. This picture was taken only two days in, and all in all, it went pretty smoothly. (I'll post final pictures soon). as usual, I did the face in one sitting, then was able to do the rest of the flesh tone the following day. I played around a bit with this piece: tried my best to loosen up a little, painted some pearls for the first time, did some different things with the background...It was a fun one.Next up, I'm going to do a piece for the Thinkspace group show that's going to the UK in June.
